Rostechnadzor Delegation Meets U.S. NRC Chair

On September 18, 2013, Alexey Ferapontov, Acting Chairman of Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service (Rostechnadzor) had a meeting with Allison Macfarlane, Chair of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The meeting was held on the margins of the 57th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The parties discussed issues of bilateral cooperation. "We have worked together successfully in a bilateral format. This includes the Multinational Design Evaluation Program. I thanks you for your support in establishing a VVER working group. It also includes our cooperation within the Regulatory Cooperation Forum. By the way, in my opinion, the issues of assistance to the regulators from the countries embarking on a peaceful nuclear program and also licensing of new designs would be sufficiently interesting topics for our bilateral cooperation", Ferapontov noted.

In addition, the issue of preparing a joint interagency agreement between Rostechnadzor and the NRC on cooperation in the field of safety regulation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy was raised. The parties discussed the dates of the next conference for sharing regulatory experience. It is expected to be held in March 2014 in the United States. Presumably, that will be the place of signing of the document.
