Government Delegation of Zambia Visits Russia
The Russian-Zambian talks took place on February 16, 2017, in Moscow, to discuss issues of cooperation in the field of the use of atomic energy and sign the agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Zambia on cooperation in the construction of the Center for Nuclear Sciences and Technology in Zambia. On the Russian side, the document was signed by Alexey Likhachev, Chief Executive Officer of Rosatom, and on the Zambian side by Dr. Simon Miti, Permanent Secretary to the Cabinet Office. The Zambian delegation was headed by Dr. Roland Msiska, Secretary to the Cabinet.
As part of the Zambian delegation’s visit to Russia, working meetings between Alexey Ferapontov, Deputy Chairman of Rostechnadzor, and Dr. Jabbin Mulwanda, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Health, and Mr. Boster Siwila, Executive Director of the Radiation Protection Authority, took place on February 15 and 16.
The parties shared information on the nuclear energy regulatory systems in Russia and Zambia. With the account of the issues of interest for the Zambian party, the Rostechnadzor specialists presented detailed information on the Russian regulatory approaches to safety of research installations and the Russian requirements to safety of radiation sources. The Zambian delegation also visited the information and analysis centre of Rostechnadzor where they were told about the Service’s capabilities to assess and forecast the radiation situation and technical condition of the nuclear facilities.
Summarizing the meetings, the parties noted the reasonability of developing interagency cooperation aimed at assisting the Zambian party in the development of its national nuclear energy safety regulatory system.
