The ceremony of awarding the design and construction license for Rooppur nuclear power plant Unit 1 from the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) took place on November 4, 2017, in Dhaka. The ceremony was attended by Yeafesh Osman, Minister of Science and Technology, Mashiur Rahman, Prime Minister's Economic Affairs Adviser, Naiyyum Choudhury, BAERA Chairman, Dilip Kumar Saha, Chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC), and representatives of the Prime Minister’s Office of Bangladesh.

Addressing the participants of the ceremony, Alexey Ferapontov said: “Today we are paving the way for construction of Rooppur NPP Unit 1. Beyond any doubts, it is an impressive achievement. However, this is another milestone on our long road ahead. It will require great responsibility, unity, as well as professionalism and commitment to the values of nuclear and radiation safety.”

Awarding the BAEC license, BAERA Chairman Professor Choudhury stated that the license, although issued with certain conditions, would enable the licensee commence the major state of NPP construction. The BAERA chairman specifically noted the role of the experts from the technical support organizations of Rostechnadzor in review of the documents demonstrating the safety of Rooppur NPP construction.

Staff members of JSC VO “Safety”, a technical support organization of Rostechnadzor, are on permanent mission in the district of Pabna to provide consultancy services to the BAERA in monitoring the activities on the Rooppur site.
