Rostechnadzor Delegation Takes Part in the 6th Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Joint Convention

24.05.2018 A delegphoto.jpgation of Rostechnadzor led by Deputy Chairman of Rostechnadzor Alexey Ferapontov as part of the RussianFederation delegation is taking part in the 6th Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management (hereinafter referred to as the Joint Convention), which started on May 21 in Vienna, Austria.
On Thursday, May 24, Alexey Ferapontov together with Director for Public Policy on Radioactive Waste, Spent Nuclear Fuel and Nuclear Decommissioning of State Corporation Rosatom Oleg Kryukov presented the National Report of the Russian Federation on Compliance with the Obligations of the Joint Convention and delivered a presentation addressing answers to the written questions of the Contracting Parties of the Joint Convention to the abovementioned report.
As a result of the discussion, it was noted that all key tasks assigned to the Russian Federation at the previous meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Joint Convention have been accomplished or are in progress. Moreover, a few areas were identified where the Russian authorities in the field of the use of atomic energy have reached state-of-the-art results. These include the development of safety requirements to the management of special radioactive waste, establishment of general acceptance criteria for radioactive waste disposal, review of the national safety requirements alongside with the review of the respective IAEA standards.
The representatives of Rostechnadzor are also participating in the discussions of the national reports presented by the countries from the Russian Federations’s country group as well as other country groups of the 6th Review Meeting.
The meeting will be closed on June 1, 2018.
The Review Meetings of the Contracting Parties to the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management  (came into force in 1997) are held once every three years, with the previous meeting held in May 2015. The convention aims to review the progress of the member-countries of the Joint Convention achieved to complete their obligations arising from the Joint Convention.
The objectives of the Joint Convention are to achieve and maintain a high level of safety worldwide in spent fuel and radioactive waste management, through the enhancement of national measures and international cooperation, ensurance of effective defenses against potential hazards, prevention of radiation accidents and mitigation of their consequences.
