Rostechnadzor Delegation Visited Islamic Republic of Iran
29.05.2018 On 28-29 May 2018, Chairman of Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service (Rostechnadzor) Alexey Aleshin visited the Islamic Republic of Iran. The major purpose of the visit was discussing prospects for development of the cooperation between Rostechnadzor and Iran Nuclear Regulatory Authority (INRA) under the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI).
As part of the visit, Alexey Aleshin held a working meeting with Hojatollah Salehi, Head of INRA and met Dr. Ali Akbar Salehi, Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Iran – President of the AEOI.
During the meeting with Dr. Ali Akbar Salehi, which took place on 28 May in the AEOI HQ in Tehran, the parties underlined the importance of cooperation between the two countries in the area of safety regulation of the peaceful use of atomic energy and reaffirmed determination to make every effort for its further development. Alexey Aleshin, in his turn, noted that the Russian and Iranian regulators had interacted for more than 20 years and at that point all the prerequisites provide for making the interaction more profound and promote successful implementation of the agreements that would be reached in course of that visit.
The Iranian party presented proposed areas of future cooperation with the Russian party.
The Rostechnadzor representatives delivered presentations on the Russian approaches to safety regulation of activities in the field of the peaceful use of atomic energy. In particular, the following was among the topics: arranging and conduct of the safety review as part of licensing; safety regulation of nuclear fuel cycle facilities; safety regulation in the radioactive waste management and radioactive materials transportation; supervision over physical protection of nuclear facilities, etc.
The Rostechnadzor delegation comprised of representatives of the relevant units within the Rostechnadzor HQ as well as directors of the Rostechnadzor’s TSOs – JSC VO “Safety” and Scientific and Engineering Centre for Nuclear and Radiation Safety.
The meeting resulted in a parties’ agreement to expand the cooperation in a number of areas, such as supervision over accounting & control and physical protection of nuclear and radioactive materials, safety regulation of nuclear research facilities, safety regulation in the transportation of nuclear materials. Moreover, during the visit, agreement was reached to expand the cooperation between INRA and JSC VO “Safety”.
The agreement of cooperation in the field of safety regulation in the nuclear energy use between Atomic Energy Organization of Iran and Federal nuclear and radiation safety authority of Russia was signed on 6 July 1997.
